Leaving Lake Superior

Our Trip Home from camping at Lake Superior

We were up at five-thirty on this day that we were heading home.  We packed as we waited for the kettle to boil, so we could have one last coffee at our campsite. Rod and I were in the truck and heading out of Pancake Bay Provincial Park by six-forty. I had mixed emotions…I was happy to be heading home to see our girls including Jade (our furry four legged girl), sleep in my own bed, and to see how my garden was doing. But I was sad to be leaving Lake Superior which meant camping vacation was over where there was so much more we wanted to do, see and explore.

We stopped at the Trading Post in Sault Ste. Marie to gas up.  The Trading Post is a really cool place with lots of souveniers, fishing tackle, gas, propane, groceries, you name it they have it.

This carved fish is actually a weather vane accurately telling which way the wind is blowing. It weighs over 450 pounds.

We left the Sault turning onto highway 17 by eight AM. The ride home was uneventful and seemed to take a long time…I guess it was a long time…about eight and a half hours long.

One thing we noticed is Highway 17 is not abundant on gas stations, rest rooms, picnic areas or coffee shops!! It wasn’t until 12:40 that we found a Tim Horton’s in Sturgeon Falls, where we stopped to grab a cheese bagel and a coffee.

We got to North Bay and the gas tank was on EMPTY, couldn’t find a gas station off of the highway in North Bay, we ended up pulling off a side street to gas up…I thought we were going to run out of gas, that would have been just great with a trailer on!!

We were home by 3:00 pm, Jade was very happy to see us as she greeted us in her doggy style with tail wagging. So after driving 1868 km for our round trip, that about sums up our awesome first trip to Lake Superior…can’t wait to return!!
