Our Lake Superior Camping Adventure Part 2

Beach at Katherine Cove

Beach at Katherine Cove

We stopped at Katherine Cove to have lunch. While Rod barbequed hotdogs for lunch, I took a walk on the beautiful white sand beach. There’s just something about feeling the sand between your toes and walking the beach in bare feet…I was trying to absorb my surroundings and just trying to live in the moment. Once Rod had our lunch cooked (he is an awesome chef at the barbeque), we sat at the picnic table and devoured our hotdog…yum yum!!
After lunch we took a walk down the beach where the sand ended and a rocky shore of boulders began. We stopped here and searched for more beautiful gemstones and rocks. As we made our way back, someone was playing with their dog at the beach…the dog was having fun frolicking in the water playing fetch-a-stick.
Rod and I left Katherine Cove at one-forty-five; we headed up the highway to our next adventure… Gargantua; the name sounds like an old B movie. :)
On the way in on Gargantua Road we stopped to take a few pictures of a little hawk sitting on a branch. We arrived at Gargantua at two-thirty.
We walked up the shore line; the cobble beaches will challenge even the physically fit. At times we literally hopped from one large stone to the next; one could very easily twist an ankle. I was glad we hadn’t brought our dog Jade, definitely not a place to take your dog for a walk.
We continued up the coastline, I think it was called the “Devil’s Coastline”. We hiked for about an hour, pausing here and there to take pictures, view our surroundings, and admire the cobblestones, rocks and boulders. We were having a blast exploring. I’m not even sure where we were when we turned around. I would have loved to continue hiking along the wild and rugged coastal trail, but by three-thirty a thick fog started to move in, and we thought time was marching on…so we’d better head back.
It took us about an hour to hike back. We stopped along the way to admire and take more pictures of the stones and rocks; by the time we got back to the truck it was four-thirty. I felt exhilarated but also a little bit tired. On the way back to our campsite at Pancake Bay, fog rolled in along the highway, and just as fast as the fog rolled in, it lifted at Montreal River Harbour.
It had been a great day, hiking and exploring. :)

More to come…. Heather
